L.M. Montgomery and Canadian Literature Abroad: A “bridge” to Canada

Few Canadian authors have managed to capture the devotion of readers worldwide in the way of L.M. Montgomery—and certainly not to the extent that Japanese readers have embraced Anne of Green Gables over the past sixty years. Since the acclaimed release of Hanako Muraoka’s 1952 translation of Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables(1908), the novel has inspired a variety of Anne-related cultural products in Japan, including a 50-episode animated television series in 1979 [Nippon Animation’s 赤毛のアン]; a 3-volume manga series published in 1997 [The Kumon Manga Library’s 赤毛のアン]; a 2014 NHK drama entitled “Hanako and Anne” [花子とアン] and even a “Canadian World” theme park (now defunct) in Ashibetsu, Hokkaido. For many Japanese readers—and undoubtedly for millions of readers around the world—Montgomery’s fiction, poetry, and life writing offered them a literary “bridge” to Canada. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to explore the reasons for Montgomery’s popularity in Japan, as well as in other countries outside of her native Canada, and to consider how Canadian Literature is taught and received abroad.

We welcome scholars, students, and fans interested in these fields and invite you to submit a proposal for a 20-minute presentation, on any aspect related to Montgomery and other Canadian writers with a following abroad. Some themes that we hope to accept include:

 

• Translation and Adaptation of Canadian Literature

• Literature and Contents Tourism

• Representations of Gender, Family, and Community in Montgomery’s Writing

• Fandom and Anne’s Global Popularity

• Teaching Canadian Studies and Canadian Literature

 

 

Please submit a proposal of 200–250 words and a biographical statement of approximately 70 words by November 20th, 2018 to kristiecollins(@)yahoo.com  (Please delete the brackets when you copy to submit the documents.)​ (Be sure that the deadline is extended, and the email address changed.)

As all papers will be offered in English only, we ask that all proposals be submitted in English as well. Conference organizers will notify applicants as to the success of their proposals by late-November 2018.
